Career
Progression
2001 - Independent Consultant, Philip Derbyshire Consultancy Ltd
I have been involved in a wide variety of work including acting as an expert, undertaking technical audits on behalf of the Federation of Piling Specialists, designing an estimating system and helping a company in the USA start a new piling system to them, the CFA system.

During this period my main responsibilities were running contracts. Westpile undertook a range of piling techniques including CFA, Rotary and Driven Precast Piles. For part of this period I was Engineering Director, responsible for all technical matters within the company. Notable contracts with which I was involved during this period included the foundations for the London Eye (Millennium Wheel). I was responsible for the successful application by the company for the Investors in People award.
1992 - 1996 Managing Director, Westpile Ltd.
During this time I gained experience in all aspects of running a medium sized company with approximately 100 staff plus 100 hourly paid employees. The company traded predominately in the UK but also operated in the Middle East ( Egypt and U.A.E. ). In 1993 I was Chairman of the Federation of Piling Specialists. I instigated the Federation’s stance against the holding of retention moneys.
1986 - 1992 Contracts Director, Westpile Ltd.
I was appointed to this position in September 1986. The company was entering a period of great change, particularly on the operational side, and I was responsible for integrating what had previously been two separate organisations. Later I proposed and implemented the successful entry of the company into the Rotary Piling sector of the UK market.
1972 - 1986 Cementation Piling & Foundations Ltd.
I joined Cementation as a Design Engineer and spent five years in the technical department, four as deputy to the Chief Engineer. I then progressed through a number of line management appointments on the contracts side including setting up and running a new piling system (CFA) and heading several of the operating departments. For 18 months commencing in 1983 I was project manager on a £10 million contract at Barrow in Furness, the largest specialist contract of its type at that time.
1970 - 1972 Mott Hay & Anderson, Consulting Engineers
After graduating I joined this practice and gained experience both in the design office and on site. The projects involved were bridges and tunnels.
1967 - 1970 University of Bristol (see below)
1966 - 1967 George Wimpey & Co. Ltd.
